Lunch Date with History: Whipps Garden Cemetery: A story of life and death, with a dash of family intrigue. w/ Betty Walke. Museum of Howard County History (8328 Court Ave) 12:00 – 1:15. Free for HCHS Members, $5 General Admission.
Betty Walke-Whipps, Treasurer of The Friends of Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc. will give a presentation on the history and reclamation of The Whipps Garden Cemetery.
The one-acre wooded park was purchased in 1855 for the sum of $73.50 to serve as a burial ground for the Whipps family, Howard County farmers and merchants who also served as blacksmiths at Oakland Manor – now Oakland Mills in Columbia, Maryland.
Nestled in the St. John’s neighborhood, this green oasis is owned by a non-profit organization – The Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc. – and maintained by dedicated community volunteers and HoCo Master Gardeners.
It is a place of the living, not the dead, alive with the beauty of nature and an inspiration for those who love gardens.
